COS 100 INTRODUCTION
TO COSMETOLOGY THEORY (5-0-5)
Prerequisite: Program admission
Introduces the fundamental theory and practices of the cosmetology
profession. Emphasis will be placed on professional practices and
safety. Topics include: state and local laws, rules, and regulations;
professional image, bacteriology, decontamination and infection
control; chemistry fundamentals; safety; Hazardous Duty Standards
Act compliance; and anatomy and physiology and types of equipment.
COS 101 INTRODUCTION
TO PERMANENT WAVING AND RELAXING (3-2-4)
Prerequisite/Corequisite: COS 100
Introduces the chemistry and chemical reactions of permanent wave
solutions and relaxers. Topics include: permanent wave techniques,
safety procedures, chemical relaxer techniques, chemistry, and permanent
wave and chemical relaxer application procedures on manikins, hair
and scalp analysis and physical and chemical damage.
COS 103 INTRODUCTION
TO SKIN, SCALP AND HAIR (2-2-3)
Prerequisite/Corequisite: COS 100
Introduces the theory, procedures, and products used in the care
and treatment of the skin, scalp and hair. Topics include: basic
corrective hair and scalp treatments, plain facial, products and
supplies, diseases and disorders, and safety precautions.
COS 105 INTRODUCTION
TO SHAMPOOING AND STYLING (2-4-4)
Prerequisite: COS 100
Introduces the fundamental theory and skills required to shampoo
and create shapings, pincurls, fingerwaves, roller placement, and
combouts. Laboratory training includes styling training to total
20 hours on manikins and 25 hours on live models without compensation.
Topics include: braiding/intertwining hair, shampoo chemistry, shampoo
procedures, styling principles, pincurls, roller placement, finger-
waves, combout techniques, skipwaves, ridgecurls, and safety precautions.
COS 106 INTRODUCTION
TO HAIRCUTTING (2-2-3)
Prerequisite: COS 100
Introduces the theory and skills necessary to apply haircutting
techniques. Safe use of haircutting implements will be stressed.
Topics include: haircutting terminology, safety, decontamination,
and precautions, cutting implements, and haircutting techniques.

107 INTRODUCTION TO HAIRCUTTING (0-2-3)
Prerequisite: COS 106
This course continues the theory and application of haircutting
techniques. Topics include: client consultation, head, hair, and
body analysis, style cutting, haircutting techniques, and client
consultations/head/hair/body analysis.
COS 108 PERMANENT
WAVING AND RELAXING (2-2-3)
Prerequisites:COS 101
Provides instruction in the application of permanent waves and relaxers.
Precautions and special problems involved in applying permanent
waves and relaxers will be emphasized. Application of perms and
relaxers on live models is included. Topics include: timed permanent
wave; timed relaxer application; safety precautions; Hazardous Duty
Standards Act compliance.
COS 109 HAIR
COLOR (4-4-6)
Prerequisites/Corequisites: COS 100, COS 101, COS 103, COS
105, COS 106, COS 108
Presents the application of temporary, semi-permanent, deposit
only, and permanent hair coloring and decolorization products. Topics
include: basic color concepts, classifications of color, safety
precautions, consultation, communication and record and release
forms, product knowledge, special problems in hair color and corrective
coloring, and Special Effects.
COS 110 SKIN,
SCALP, AND HAIR (2-2-3)
Prerequisite/Corequisites: COS 100, COS 101, COS 103, COS
105, COS 106, COS 108, COS 109
Provides instruction on and application of techniques and theory
in the treatment of the skin, scalp, and hair. Emphasis will be
placed on work with live models. Topics include: implements; products
and supplies, corrective hair and scalp treatments, facial procedures
and manipulations; safety precautions; cosmetic chemistry/products
and supplies, and treatment theory; electricity, light therapy and
electrotherapy.
COS 111 STYLING
(1-4-3)
Prerequisites: COS 105
Corequisite: COS 110
Continues the theory and application of hairstyling and introduces
thermal techniques. Topics include: blow dry styling; thermal curling;
thermal pressing; thermal waving; advanced cutting and styling;
safety precautions; and artificial hair and augmentation.
COS 112 MANICURING
AND PEDICURING (2-2-3)
Prerequisite/Corequisite: COS 100
Provides manicuring and pedicuring experience on live models. Topics
include: implements, products and supplies, hand and foot anatomy,
and physiology, diseases and disorders, manicure techniques, pedicure
techniques, nail product chemistry, safety precautions and practices
and advanced nail techniques (wraps, tips, acrylics).

Provides laboratory experiences necessary for the development of
skill levels required to be a competent cosmetologist. The allocation
of time to the various phases of cosmetology is prescribed by the
Georgia State Board of Cosmetology. This course includes a portion
of the hours required for licensure. Topics include: permanent waving
and relaxers; hair color and bleaching; skin, scalp, and hair treatments;
haircutting; styling; dispensary; manicure/pedicure/advanced nail
techniques; reception; safety precautions/decontamination; and Hazardous
Duty Standards Act compliance.
COS 114 PRACTICUM
II (4-12-8)
Prerequisite/Corequisite: COS 113
Provides laboratory experiences necessary for the development of
skill levels required to be a competent cosmetologist. The allocation

of the hours required for licensure. Topics include: permanent waving

Provides experience necessary for professional development and completion
of requirements for state licensure. Emphasis will be placed on
the display of professional conduct and positive attitudes. The
appropriate number of applications for completion of state board
service credit requirements for this course may be met in a laboratory
setting. The maximum number of internship hours for this course
is 50 clock hours. Topics include: permanent waving and relaxers;
hair color and bleaching; skin, scalp, and hair treatment; haircutting;
styling; dispensary; manicure/pedicure/advanced nail techniques;
reception; safety precautions/decontamination; and Hazardous Duty
Standards Act Compliance.

owned cosmetology salon. Topics include: planning a salon/shop,
business management, retailing, public relations, sales skills,
career development, and client retention.

Provides additional experience in manicuring and pedicuring techniques
required of applicants for state licensure. Emphasis is placed
on performance, using live models in an actual or simulated occupational
setting. Topics include: manicure, nail repair, artificial nails,
pedicure, advanced and new techniques, and safety/sanitation.

Provides nail care experience on live models. Emphasis will be
placed on the display of professional conduct and positive attitudes.
The appropriate number of applications required by the State Board
of Cosmetology in theory and service credit requirements for this
course. Emphasis is place on performance, using live models in
an actual or simulated occupational setting. Topics include: manicure,
nail repair, artificial nails, pedicure, nail art, electric file,
HIV and OSHA updates, receptionist and dispensary, state board licensure
preparation, and safety/sanitation.

Introduces the fundamental theory and practices of the cosmetology
instructor profession. Emphasis will be placed on fostering and
providing educational training in the field of Cosmetology. Topics
include: state and local laws, rules and regulations, professional
image, effective communication, theory of instruction, Hazardous
Duty Standards Act Compliance, and various career opportunities.

Introduces the basic record keeping concepts in cosmetology and
related areas. Topics include: attendance, grades, student service
and theory hours, basic record keeping, and effective use of an

Identify the characteristics of the different learner types and
teaching methods. Topics include: challenges for all learner styles,
