GIS 1101 INTRODUCTION TO GIS (1-4-3)
Prerequisite: Program Admission
An introduction to the principles and applications of Geographic Information Systems.
Examines the accuracy and applications of geographic information including data structure, spatial analysis, data management, data visualization, and data retrieval. Emphasis is placed on the interdisciplinary nature of GIS and its relevance to industry and society.

GIS 1103 INTERMEDIATE GIS (2-8-6)
Prerequisite: GIS 1101
This course prepares students for geographic analysis. The course introduces students to the use of software tools in geographic and database analysis and provides practical experience in the use of GIS software for spatial analysis.

GIS 1105 INTRODUCTION TO GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEMS (1-4-3)
Prerequisite: GIS 1101
A course in the basic use of hand-held Global Positioning Systems (GPS) unit in the field. The course will include an introduction to terminology, hardware, and technology used in GPS. Instruction will include the fundamentals of operating a hand-held GPS unit. The course will introduce the basic techniques used in the determination of feature location and completion of maps in GIS.

GIS 1109 SPECIAL TOPICS IN GIS (1-4-3)
Prerequisite: GIS 1101, GIS 1105
This course allows instructors to cover topics that are specifically related to their service area. Examples of projects are: precision agriculture, fire and crime, water usage, historical data, and utility layouts. Students will be assigned a project that will benefit them in employment for their current service area.

GIS 1114 ADVANCED GIS: APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT (2-8-6)
Prerequisite: GIS 1103
This course provides practical experience in designing a Geographic Information Systems model. Implementing a research design with spatial data relevant to their field of interest, students sharpen their GIS technical and problem-solving skills. GIS models useful to the government and private industry are examined.

GIS 1116 SPATIAL ANALYSIS IN GIS (2-8-6)
Prerequisite: GIS 1103
This course provides advanced concepts to spatial analysis. The course will briefly review the principles of statistics and relate them to methods used in analysis of geographically referenced data. The course will introduce sampling strategies for data used in GIS using raster and vector data structures. The fundamentals of geostatistical, 3D visualization, and network techniques are examined through practical experience.

GIS 1120 INTRODUCTION TO RASTER-BASED GIS (2-8-6)
Prerequisite: GIS 1101
Introductory concepts in GIS Raster-based information including orthophotography and satellite imagery are examined. Emphasis is placed on the use of remotely sensed data in urban and environmental GIS applications with practical experience using spatial and 3D software.

GIS 1122 GIS IN SCIENCE, BUSINESS AND GOVERNMENT (2-8-6)
Prerequisites: GIS 1103
This course includes an in-depth survey of the various ways that GIS applications are being used in science (geography, geology, and meteorology), government (city, county, state, and federal) and business (marketing). Topics will include data acquisition, accuracy, spatial analysis, and presentation techniques necessary for various GIS applications.

GIS 1124 CARTOGRAPHIC DESIGN FOR GIS (2-8-6)
Prerequisite: GIS 1103
This course provides a comprehensive study of GIS applicable to cartography including cartographic principles, data acquisition methods used in map production, and methods of basemap development. Techniques used in GIS base map development are introduced using hands-on exercises.

GIS 1126 DATABASE DESIGN AND MANAGEMENT IN GIS (2-8-6)
Prerequisite: GIS 1101
This course examines the principles of database design and management including conversion fundamentals and modeling techniques. Topics include database integration concepts, development of user interface, troubleshooting databases, relational database concepts, and database design in GIS.

GIS 1127 GIS INTERNET MAPPING (5-0-5)
Prerequisite: GIS 1101
This course provides the opportunity for students to use the latest Internet mapping tools to deliver GIS and Location Based Services via the Internet. Students will be trained to deliver GIS applications on the Internet using a variety of tools and emerging standards.

GIS 1130 GIS INTERNSHIP (0-15-5)
Prerequisite: Completion of all GIS program courses
A directed field study program whereby students will apply classroom instruction to real world GIS projects in the community.
