Frequently Asked Questions

I probably don't qualify for aid. Should I apply for aid anyway?

Yes. Students often think they do not qualify for aid and prevent themselves from receiving the financial assistance that is available. The college offers a variety of financial aid programs with different eligibility requirements.

How do I apply for Financial Aid?

CGTC Financial Aid applications are available online with helpful guidelines. Click here to apply.

If I am not eligible for Federal Grants, can I apply for a student loan?

No, CGTC does not participate in the Student Loan Program. The grant & scholarships CGTC offers assist a large majority of the student population with tuition and book costs. An additional percentage of students receive assistance with other educational costs.

How do I know if I qualify for financial aid?

After applying and submitting all required documents, the financial aid office will send you an award letter. This letter will explain what types of aid you are eligible to receive. It will list the maximum amounts a student can receive each quarter in the award year. Also, a student can go Banner Web to look up their status.

When will I know if I am eligible for any aid?

Normal processing time usually takes about 3 weeks. When applying between February and April the Financial Aid Office begins notifying students in April.

Do I have to attend full time to receive financial aid?

No, you can take one class and qualify for financial aid.

How do I qualify for Supplemental Educational Oppportunity Grant?

There is not a separate application for SEOG. The FAFSA is used to apply for the grant. It is funded to students based on need, all financial aid received is considered, a student's overall GPA must be at least 2.0, the student must be enrolled at least halftime (6 or more credit hours) and sometimes his/her status requirements are considered. Students enrolled in a certificate program or have already earned a Bachelor's Degree do not qualify.

Can a financial aid application be completed if a student did not file taxes for the last year?

If the student and/or parent was required to file taxes based on IRS laws, but did not file a tax return, they are not eligible to receive financial aid. Students with low income and not required to file a tax return may apply for aid. When completing the FAFSA, the student must list any income earned from work(a job), Social Security, TANF, Child Support, other monies received, or an amount paid for living expenses. NOTE: The HOPE Application does not require tax or income information.

If I don't attend classes, what happens to the Pell Grant and HOPE Grant for the quater listed on my award letter?

The award letter does list awards for the entire financial aid year. However, if a student does not attend class, he cannot receive financial aid. Classes that are not eligible for financial aid are those you do not attend, do not make, and do not start.

What happens if my tuition and fee charges are not paid by the deadline?

If not paid, your schedule of classes will be dropped from the system and you will not be considered a student enrolled in a program.

I want to attend 2 schools at the same time, is it possible for me to receive the Pell Grant at both schools during this financial aid year?

No, you can only receive a Federal Pell Grant from one school for the same period of enrollment. The student must notify all schools they plan to attend and inform the school where they want to have federal aid disbursed. Students that do not notify the schools they attend and receive the Pell Grant from both will be discovered. The student will have to repay some financial aid and/or costs.

Can a transient student receive financial aid at the transient college?

Yes, the Georgia HOPE Grant or Scholarship is available to qualifying transient students. Contact your home college's Admissions and Financial Aid Office to apply for transient status.

How do I receive the Pell book voucher?

Pell book vouchers are only available to students who have been awarded the Pell Grant. Once you have registered you can submit a Pell Voucher request and check status.

How do I receive the HOPE book voucher?

HOPE book vouchers are processed electronically as students are awarded HOPE and once they have registered for courses. Check HOPE book voucher status.

If I moved to Georgia less than 1 year ago, can I still receive the HOPE Grant?

A student must be a legal resident of Georgia one year before the first day of the quarter they are planning to enroll in classes to be considered eligible for the HOPE Grant.

If I claimed people on my tax returns, can I claim them in the household on the FAFSA?

If an applicant has children or other dependents who live with them and receive more than half thier support from the student, they can be included as a member of the household on the FAFSA. The student should only report people in the household who they directly support from July 1- June 30 of the Financial Aid year.

Do I have to reapply every quarter?

No, the Financial Aid Award year is from July 1- June 30. The student should only submit a FAFSA or HOPE Application once during an award year.

If I get married after I complete my application, can I change my marital status?
